Weld Backing/Chill Rings

Weld Backing / Chill Rings

Imperial Weld Ring's Weld Backing / Chill Rings are available in:

Long Spacers | Short Spacers | Plain (Without Spacers) | Pressed-Type Spacers | Ridge-Type Continuous Spacers | Naval / Military | Flared Pipe-End Type

Long Spacers

Also can be referred to as long pins, knock-off pins, or removable pins, this style Weld Ring easily aligns pipe joints even when variation in inside diameters is significant and automatically establishes required root gap for best welding. After tacking pipe ends in place, long spacers are readily removed. Chamfered pins allow close tolerance fit-up and clean strike-off. Full penetration, X-Ray inspection quality welds are consistently obtained.

Short Spacers

Short Spacers / Short Pins may be readily consumed in welder's initial pass when desired. This style Weld Ring functions similarly to Long Spacer style with added benefit of either removing the short pins or simply melting into the weld. The spacer height is sufficient to overcome small variations in pipe diameters. Required root gap is established with ease.

Plain (Without Spacers)

This style Weld Ring permits welder to adjust root opening as desired depending on wall thickness, speed of initial pass, etc.

Pressed-Type Spacers

These style Weld Rings have spacers which are punched from parent ring, which eliminates foreign material from root of joint. Pressed-Type Spacers typically have a height of approximately one-half the cross-sectional thickness of the backing ring and are not removable.

Ridge-Type Continuous Spacers

The machined spacer bead on this style Weld Ring ensures perfect spacing of the joints for welding. The continuous ridge encompasses the entire root opening and allows for 100% welds with a minimum usage of welding electrodes.

This weld ring is used primarily for vessels having to adhere to military requirements. Parts are in full compliance with MIL-STD-22D.

Flared Pipe-End Type

Imperial's unique design for use with flared pipe ends. Internal bevels eliminate fraying of electrical cables in the installation of underground power transmission lines. The machined spacer bead ensures perfect spacing of the joints for field welds with a minimum usage of welding electrodes.
